President Vladimir Putin sent a message of congratulations to German President Johannes Rau and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Germany's national holiday, the Day of German Unity

October 3, 2000

The President’s message reads, in particular:

“Impressive positive changes have taken place in relations between our countries over the decade since Germany’s reunification. We have attained a high level of understanding and trust in our bilateral dialogue, are developing productive and mutually beneficial cooperation in diverse areas and expanding our work together on the international stage. Good-neighbourly relations and partnership between Russia and Germany have become a reality benefiting millions of our citizens.

Russia is firmly intent on maintaining and building on this common achievement. I am sure that the continued development of cooperation between our countries in the twenty-first century will help to consolidate security and stability in Europe and throughout the world.

I wish you success in your important work, and I wish the friendly people of Germany peace, happiness and prosperity”.
