President Vladimir Putin sent a message congratulating President of Yugoslavia Vojislav Kostunica on his official inauguration

October 9, 2000

The message reads:

“Dear Mr President,

I would like to congratulate you on your official inauguration as President of the Republic of Yugoslavia and say that I am sure that the close and friendly ties between Russia and Yugoslavia will continue to develop on the foundation of the historical brotherhood between our peoples.

As I noted in my message of October 6, Russia remains a faithful friend of Yugoslavia and will provide it with all possible assistance in upholding its national dignity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. We will work consistently and resolutely to return Yugoslavia to its status as a full-fledged member of the international community and to achieve an immediate and unconditional lifting of all external sanctions.

I am sure that the multifaceted relations of friendship and cooperation between our countries will continue to develop actively in the interests of our peoples and in the interests of strengthening peace and security in the Balkans.

I wish you success in your important work, Mr President, and I invite you to make a visit to Moscow”.
