Mr Putin is in India on a four-day state visit.

After the welcome ceremony at the airport, the President went to his residence at the Maurya Sheraton Hotel.

Later, Mr Putin had a brief meeting with Indian Prime Minister Atal Bahari Vajpayee at the Prime Minister’s residence. Members of the Russian delegation taking part in the meeting were Secretary of the Security Council Sergei Ivanov, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Prikhodko.

The meeting was followed by an official lunch in honour of Mr Putin.
