President Vladimir Putin held talks with President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev

After an official welcome ceremony at the airport, Mr Putin and Mr Nazarbayev had a brief discussion.

The two Presidents held talks at the Presidential Palace, first one-on-one and then with their delegations. The talks discussed security in Central Asia and the development of cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan.

Following their talks, Mr Putin and Mr Nazarbayev signed a declaration on cooperation between the two countries in the Caspian Sea. They also signed a memorandum on developing humanitarian cooperation and adopted a joint communique on the results of Mr Putin’s visit to Kazakhstan.

A number of other bilateral agreements were also signed, including a memorandum between the governments of Russia and Kazakhstan on cooperation in the fuel and energy sector, an agreement on opening a Russian consulate in Uralsk in Kazakhstand and a Kazakhstan consulate in Astrakhan in Russia, an agreement on the status of Russian journalists in Kazakhstan and Kazakhstan journalists in Russia, and an agreement on the principles for collecting indirect taxes in mutual trade. A protocol was also signed to open a branch of Moscow State University in Kazakhstan.

Mr Putin and Mr Nazarbayev gave a joint press conference following their talks.
