President Vladimir Putin and US President Bill Clinton exchanged letters after a spacecraft with a Russian-American crew was launched to the ISS from the Baikonur Space Centre

Mr Putin said the launch marked a new stage of the ISS programme, with a permanent manned mission.

The Russian President supported further closer cooperation between Russia and the United Stares and other countries in the ISS programme. He said implementing the programme was crucial for peaceful space exploration.
