Dmitry Medvedev took part in the opening of the X World Russian Press Congress

June 11, 2008, Moscow

In his speech Mr Medvedev said that freedom of the press, respect for human rights and the rule of law are immutable guiding lines for the state.

The President said that Russia will always show the utmost attention for the problems of the Russian language press, whether in neighbouring countries or further abroad, and will support projects aimed at bringing people closer through information.

The Congress is set to examine the current state of the Russian-language press abroad and the Russian language’s role in the development of world civilisation, and also the World Russian Press Association’s involvement in the lives of Russian communities abroad in a globalising world.

After addressing the Congress, Mr Medvedev answered delegates' questions.
