President Vladimir Putin sent a message to Iraq's President Saddam Hussein

November 15, 2000

The message reaffirmed the Russian leadership’s determination to work for an early political settlement of the Iraqi issue and for lifting the sanctions. This would allow the Iraqi people to return to a normal life.

The message underlined the importance of developing a constructive dialogue between Iraq and the United Nations Organisation on the fulfilment of relevant decisions of the international community, and also the need to stop illegal bombings of the Iraqi territory in the so-called flight-free zones.

It confirmed Russia’s determination to develop contacts with Iraq and to spare no efforts for strengthening peace and security in the Persian Gulf.

While in Baghdad, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov passed the message over to Saddam Hussein.
