President Putin opened the meeting by saying that Belgium was one of Russia’s privileged partners. The President emphasised the fact that the Belgian Prime Minister was paying special attention to strengthening bilateral relations. Mr Putin said that Russian-Belgian trade turnover had totalled $2 billion in 1999 and could reach $2.5 billion in 2000.
The Russian President expressed hope for fruitful bilateral cooperation both with Belgium and the European Union.
