President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with French President Jacques Chirac

September 17, 2001, Sochi

This telephone conversation was a follow-up on Mr Puitn’s talks with heads of Western and CIS countries after the tragic events in the US.

In the light of Mr Chirac’s upcoming visit to Washington and his negotiations with Mr Bush on September 18, Mr Putin and Mr Chirac exchanged their opinions on the reaction of international community to terrorist provocations and the best measures to prevent them.

President Putin stressed that in the view of the large number of options in fighting against terrorism it was necessary to choose the most efficient ones, taking into consideration the duration of the effort and focusing on destroying terrorists’ political and financial sources.

Mr Putin and Mr Chirac agreed to hold future bilateral and multilateral consultations, including within the framework of the UN Security Council, the EU, the G8 and other authoritative organisations and unions.
