At the beginning of the parade the flag of the Russian Federation and the Banner of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 were carried out to the Red Square.

According to the President's instructions, commander of the forces of the Moscow Military District Colonel-General Valery Gerasimov was in charge of the parade. Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov reviewed the parade.

President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev welcomed war veterans, those involved in the parade and guests. The President congratulated those present and all Russian citizens on the Victory Day.

The Russian national anthem was played. Drummers from the Russian Military Academy and Russian Military University then led the parade. They were followed by the colour guards with the Russian national flag, the Victory Banner, the banner of the Russian Armed Forces, and guards of honour from three branches of the Armed Forces.

They were followed on Red Square by columns from the Russia Armed Forces General Academy, the Ministry of Defence Military University, the Peter the Great Strategic Missile Forces Academy, the Gagarin Air Force Academy, the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy, the Admiral Ushakov Maritime State Academy, the Space Forces' Moscow Military Institute of Radio-Electronics, the General Margelov Ryazan Higher Paratroops Command College, the Civil Protection Academy of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the Moscow Military Institute of the FSB Border Service, the Yaroslavl High Anti-Aircraft Missile School, the Military Technical University of the Federal Agency for Special Construction, the personnel of the guard brigade of the marines of the Baltic Fleet, the combined battalion of the guards of the parachute regiment, the battalions of the Kantemirovskaya tank division and the Taman motorized division, the personnel of the 27th guard motorized brigade, a separate active division from the internal forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. A group of Kremlin cadets concluded this part of the parade.

The mechanised column was led by a group of colour guards carrying the flag of the Ministry of Defence. In Red Square there were Tiger special armoured vehicles, BTR-80 and BMP-3 armoured personnel carriers, T-90 tanks with rocket launchers, Msta and Sprut self-propelled artillery systems, Buk air defence missile systems, S-300 Favorit and S-400 Triumph air defence missile systems, tactical Iskander-M cruise missiles, and Topol missile launch vehicles. Columns of mechanised vehicles carrying the flags of the various branches of the Armed Forces concluded this part of the parade.

The aerial part of the parade featured Mi-8 helicopters, which carried the flags of the Russian Federation, the Armed Forces and the Air Force into Red Square. They were followed by Mi-26 transport helicopter, Ka-50 Black Sharks and Ka-52 Alligators attack helicopters, Mi-28s, transport and attack Mi-24 helicopters from the world's only aerobatics helicopter gunships team Berkut; Su-25s, Ruslan An-124 military heavy-lift transport aircraft accompanied by four multi-purpose Su-27 fighters, A-50 long-range airborne early warning aircraft, Tu-22M3 bombers, Su-34s; groups simulating refueling in the air, composed of Il-78s, Su-24s, Tu-95s, MiG-29s, Tu-160s and MiG-31s, and fighters from the aerobatics teams Russian Knights and The Swifts.

Music for the parade was provided by the Moscow garrison combined orchestra consisting of 1,000 musicians. They constitute a unique 19-band musical ensemble that can only be heard during the military parade on the Red Square.

The Victory parade ended with the passage of the Moscow garrison combined military orchestra.
