Russian and Greek leaders discussed various aspects of the countries’ bilateral relations and topical international issues, including relations between Russia, the EU and NATO, the situation in the Middle East, possible ways to resolve the problems in Kosovo and in Cyprus, as well as various aspects of military technical cooperation.

A Joint Action Plan for 2007–2009 was signed in the presence of the two heads of state. According to the Russian President, implementing the ideas contained in this document is in the interests of the citizens of Russia and Greece. Russian and Greek foreign ministers, Sergei Lavrov and Dora Bakoyannis, signed the document.

At the press conference following the talks, President Vladimir Putin referred to Greece as one of Russia’s strategic partners in Europe and expressed his hope that contacts between the two countries will increase.

The Russian head of state noted the traditionally friendly and trusting spirit that distinguishes bilateral relations. Vladimir Putin emphasised that Russian-Greek dialogue is developing in a dynamic way, that relations are stable and have good prospects.

The President expressed his satisfaction with how trade and economic cooperation is developing. The head of state said that the volume of trade between Russia and Greece increased more than 30 percent in 2006 and exceeded the three billion dollar mark.

The President of Russia underlined tourism as one of the most promising spheres of cooperation. The head of state also noted the ongoing contacts between Russian and Greek Orthodox churches.

During the press conference Vladimir Putin answered questions from Russian and foreign journalists, including questions that referred to topics beyond the scope of Russian-Greek negotiations.
