Dmitry Medvedev congratulated Russia's national ice hockey team on winning the World Championship

May 11, 2009

In a telephone conversation with the team’s head coach [Vyacheslav Bykov], the President said that Russia’s team had scored an outstanding victory, and that he is proud of the team, which won all of its matches at the Championship. Mr Medvedev noted that the team’s excellent performance has brought it the title of World Champion for the second year in a row.

Later, the President sent the team a telegram of congratulations, in which he said, in particular:

“It was not an easy road to the champion’s title, but you came out onto the ice each time with your hearts set on victory, displayed excellent technique and speed, and skill in attacking with result and ensuring a strong defence. Your masterful and well-coordinated play enabled you to win each of your matches, to the unending delight of our millions of fans.

Russia’s team has become the world champion for the second year in a row. The whole country is proud of your success, proud of the top-class professionalism of Russia’s ice hockey trainers, and of your dedicated and, most importantly, fruitful work.

I am sure that your competitive spirit, strength of will and endurance will be the calling card for Russian ice hockey and will help to pave the way for new sporting achievements.”

Russia’s national ice hockey team won the World Championship, repeating its success of 2008.
