The President congratulated the Russian team on its brilliant victory at the 2009 World Championship and thanked the athletes for their masterful play and strength of will. Dmitry Medvedev also expressed his thanks to head coach Vyacheslav Bykov.
In the finals the Russian team beat Canada by a score of 2–1. The Russian team did not lose a single match in the tournament. The Russian national team also beat the Canadians in the finals of the 2008 IIHF World Championship, reclaiming the title of world champion for the first time since 1993.
