President Vladimir Putin and Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt held negotiations

October 2, 2001, Brussels

The negotiations focused on the fight against international terrorism, a new architecture for European security and a common economic space.

A series of bilateral agreements was signed as part of the official visit.

One of them was a memorandum on Russian-Belgian industrial cooperation between the Voronezh Joint Stock Aircraft Building Amalgamation (VASO), Prikladnaya Logistika scientific research centre and Belgian aeronautics company ASCO.

The State Customs Committee and the Belgian Finance Ministry concluded an agreement on coordination and cooperation between the two bodies.

Russia’s Labour and Social Development Minister Alexander Pochinok, and his Belgian opposite number, Lorette Onkelinks, signed a declaration on joint measures in such areas as employment, social policy, and migration control.

The negotiations ended with a news conference. The President answered journalists’ questions about a planned operation in Afghanistan, the situation in Chechnya, and the need for a collective security system in Europe. He described the negotiations as productive, interesting and substantive.
