President Vladimir Putin met with Chinese President Jiang Zemin

October 20, 2001, Shanghai

The two leaders underlined the high degree of confidence in Russian-Chinese relations and their identical approaches to the fight against terrorism.

Russia and China would like to move as quickly as possible from the military phase to a political settlement in Afghanistan and to strengthen strategic stability based on the 1972 Soviet-American ABM Treaty. Russia and China intend to continue coordinating their efforts in this area.
