Shanghai hosted meetings of APEC economic leaders

October 21, 2001

State leaders and prime ministers took part in a morning meeting of the summit. The meeting lasted for three hours without a break and focused on the world economy, including the Asia-Pacific region, and issues related to combating international terrorism.

Discussions continued during a working lunch.

The second meeting was held behind closed doors. It discussed primarily the prospects of the region’s development in the 21st century.

During the closing ceremony, Chinese President Jiang Zemin read out the final declaration of APEC economic leaders. The declaration said, in part, that member countries would support Russia in its efforts to enter the World Trade Organisation.

Participants in the summit also approved a declaration on combating terrorism. They condemned terrorist attacks, in particular, in the US on September 11, 2001 and spoke for the strengthening of international cooperation at all levels and confirmed the leading role of the UN in this process.
