President Vladimir Putin sent a message to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of India

March 17, 2001

The message said, in part:

“Mr Prime Minister,

“I share your concern over the decree by the Taliban authorities on the destruction of historical monuments in Afghanistan. There is much anxiety over reports that work is in full swing to destroy priceless masterpieces of ancient civilisations which belong to the whole world. These actions by the Taliban once again confirm their hostility to the world’s cultural heritage and their rejection of human values.

“I share your view that the problem must be solved by the joint efforts of all countries both bilaterally and through the United Nations and UNESCO.

“With active support from Russia, India and other countries the UN General Assembly has passed a resolution strongly condemning the Taliban for destroying relics and ancient monuments in Afghanistan. In our view the matter should be discussed at the UN Security Council since the Taliban’s barbaric acts could seriously worsen the situation in the region.

“We are looking forward to further cooperation with our Indian partners.”
