President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski

March 4, 2001

The Macedonian President was concerned about recent disturbances on the country’s border with Kosovo by Albanian extremists.

Mr Putin said that Russia, too, was worried about the invigorated action by Albanian militants in the north-west of Macedonia as well as in the south of Serbia, which was inflicting more casualties and threatening to ignite a conflict in the region.

The Russian President said that his country was cooperating with the United Nations and other international organisations to prevent the spread of the conflict and to safeguard stability on the Balkan Peninsula.

The conversation was initiated by the Macedonian side.
