President Vladimir Putin chaired a conference on improving judicial legislation

March 11, 2001, The Kremlin, Moscow

Further improvement of the judicial system should be aimed at creating a stable society and state. The peoples’ confidence in the judicial system will make it possible to meet those goals, Mr Putin said.

The head of state pointed to the deplorable financial situation of the judiciary, which was unacceptable, and suggested increasing the judges’ salaries.

Besides financial issues, the participants in the conference discussed the role of the Prosecutor’s Office in the judiciary, in particular its role in defending human rights, and the task of increasing public trust in courts.
