President Vladimir Putin held talks with his Lithuanian counterpart, Valdas Adamkus

March 30, 2001, The Kremlin, Moscow

The presidents touched upon a wide range of issues related to Russian-Lithuanian cooperation, primarily in the economy. They focused on the problem of the Kaliningrad Region following the European Union’s eastward expansion. In addition, the two leaders considered the issue of transport tariffs and instructed their governments to solve this problem.

Following the talks, the two countries’ leaders adopted a joint statement. They expressed a desire to promote bilateral relations and agreed to recognize the right of every country to choose its own means for ensuring its security, as well as its obligation to do so without encroaching on other countries’ security.

Mr Putin and Mr Adamkus also made a statement to the press and answered journalists’ questions.
