Vladimir Putin signed a decree on creating a Russian World foundation

June 21, 2007

The foundation is designed to promote the study and popularity of Russian language in Russia and in the world, as well as disseminate and develop Russia’s cultural heritage, a field in which the humanities plays an important role.

Vladimir Putin talked about this at the meeting with the delegates of the All-Russia Conference of Teachers in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The President pointed out that in today’s contradictory world humanistic values are increasingly valued despite the fact that it would seem that knowledge in applied fields such as technology and economics are the most valuable.

Vladimir Putin emphasised that together with the development of natural sciences, the social sciences are also a factor in accomplishing priority state tasks in Russia. However, the social sciences are not yet able to effectively perform their most important functions. In connection with this, Vladimir Putin placed special emphasis on the poor quality of textbooks.

A lengthy and substantive discussion took place during the meeting.
