The telephone conversation took place on the initiative of the Israeli side.
Ehud Barak told President Vladimir Putin about his assessment of the Israeli political situation in the run-up to the ahead-of-schedule general election, scheduled for February 6. Mr Putin said Russia was genuinely interested in the situation in Israel where over one million Russians live.
Both leaders also discussed the Middle East peace settlement. The Russian President reaffirmed his readiness to help deblock the present-day crisis and to ensure the continuity of the peace process.
Mr Putin and Mr Barak exchanged opinions on important aspects of bilateral relations and international security.
