April 18, 2001, The Kremlin, Moscow

They discussed the situation in the Middle East and aspects of bilateral relations.

Mr Putin and Mr Ramadan discussed the settlement of the Iraqi situation, and stressed that Moscow was demanding that sanctions against Iraq be lifted.

The Parties paid special attention to partnership in the fuel-and-energy complex and rehabilitation of industrial projects built with Soviet assistance. They reached an understanding for a meeting of experts to settle the Iraqi debt problem.

The Iraqi Vice-President passed to Mr Putin an oral message from Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, which stressed the Iraqi leadership’s interest in stepping up strategic partnership with Russia.
