Vladimir Putin was informed about how Sochi had been chosen to host the 2014 Olympics while on the airplane returning from Guatemala

Vladimir Putin departed from Guatemala a few hours before the 119th International Olympic Committee session held their first round of votes. After the results were announced deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Zhukov phoned the Russian head of state.

The President congratulated Aleksandr Zhukov on Sochi’s victory in the Olympic race. In his turn, the Prime Minister told the President about the present mood in Guatemala. Aleksandr Zhukov congratulated on behalf of the President all those who followed the vote in the IOC press centre.

Vladimir Putin then phoned te head of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, to thank him for his impartial decision. The President reiterated that all development projects in Sochi will be implemented according to the highest standards, in a timely fashion, and in close cooperation with the IOC.
