Vladimir Putin congratulated all Russian citizens on the International Olympic Committee decision to hold the 2014 Olympics in Sochi

The President met with journalists at Airport Vnukovo-2 a few minutes after returning from Guatemala.

The President said that the decision to hold the Olympics in Sochi is also the recognition of Russia’s various contributions to sport and the country’s increasing possibilities, especially in the economic and social spheres. The decision also represents support for Russia from an authoritative and independent international organisation, the International Olympic Committee.

Vladimir Putin noted that preparing and hosting the Olympic Games in Sochi will act as a powerful impetus for the development of the south of Russia.

President Putin has signed a decree on Preparations for the 22nd Winter Olympic Games and the 11th Paralympic Games in 2014 in Sochi.
