Russian-American relations should be focused on the interests of both countries' peoples and should not depend on political needs of the moment either in Russia or the United States

July 13, 2007

Speaking at a meeting with members of the Russian-U.S. public working group “Russia – USA: Looking at the Future”, President Vladimir Putin noted the importance and global dimension of the issues the group’s members included on the agenda for their meetings. Mr Putin highlighted in particular the geopolitical overview focusing on the relations between Russia and the United States, the world economy, nuclear non-proliferation, the energy sector, and common interests between Russia and the U.S.

Efforts must be made to ensure that the attitude towards Russian-American contacts reaches a level of national consensus such that the overwhelming majority of people in both countries realise their importance not just for bilateral relations but also for resolving global problems, Mr Putin said.
