Vladimir Putin sent a message to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

May 30, 2001

The message deals with the Middle East issue and current bilateral issues.

Mention is made of Russia’s intention to continue efforts to help settle the protracted crisis around the Palestinian territories and resume the Arab-Israeli peace process. Invigoration of talks with Syria and Lebanon is considered as an indispensable condition for progress toward a comprehensive settlement.

Vladimir Putin welcomed the quickened pace and an ever higher level of versatile cooperation between Russia and Syria.

The Russian President’s message was delivered to Bashar al-Assad in Damascus by Yevgeny Primakov, the leader of the State Duma faction “Fatherland-All Russia”, now in the Middle East on a diplomatic mission.
