May 30, 2001, The Kremlin, Moscow

The President declared in favor of enhancing the role of the state in Gazprom while preserving the interests of the shareholders.

The head of state said that the Russian economy was largely based on the gas and power industries, with 25% of the federal budget coming from Gazprom activities. But a situation when economic development largely depended on the power sector could not last long, he added.

The meeting was also attended by former Gazprom CEO Rem Vyakhirev, Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov and deputy chief of the Presidential Executive Office Dmitry Medvedev.
