The situation in Afghanistan was the main topic of discussion during the Russian-German consultations. The heads of state voiced similar positions on the key aspects of the Afghan crisis and expressed their common opinion that the counter-terrorist operation in this country was being carried out according to the plan. In particular, Mr Putin said he disagreed with those who believed the operation was marking time. Fighting international terrorism in Afghanistan will be a long-term challenge, and requires much effort, and possibly victims, the President said.
The Russian and German leaders also discussed the ABM issue and coordination of efforts in fighting international terrorism.
Following the talks, Mr Putin and Mr Schroeder gave a joint news conference.
