President Vladimir Putin visiting the Main Intelligence Directorate

November 5, 2001, Moscow

On the Day of the Military Intelligence Officer, President Vladimir Putin met with the leadership of the Main Intelligence Directorate and veterans of Russian military intelligence.

After the meeting, Mr Putin answered journalists’ questions. He highly praised the activities of the Russian military intelligence service and said that its role should continue to grow, especially in connection with recent developments in the world and the fight against terrorism. Intelligence is a major constituent of military operations in the North Caucasus, the President added.

President Putin regards the national intelligence service as a unique instrument, which not only uses traditional methods, but also employs satellites and other modern technology, as well as special forces. These forces proved their worth in the Chechen Republic. The role of the special forces is no less important in interaction with partners in the counter-terrorist coalition, the President stressed.
