Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov reported to President Vladimir Putin on the implementation of the programme to modernise the Russian Armed Forces over the first half of 2007

During this period the Armed Forces received 36 new models of arms and military equipment, including the modernised sea-based R-29 RGU Sineva ballistic missile, the 120-mm Nona SM-1 mortar for use by artillery and ground forces, the S-400 anti-aircraft system with Triumfator missiles, and a unified command centre for space craft launch vehicle flights. Tests of the land-based Yarts missile, the sea-based Bulava missile and the air-based X-102 cruise missile were also carried out during the first half of the year. A successful launch of the Iskander-M missile complex for ground forces was carried out and two intelligence and communications satellites were put into orbit.

Mr Serdyukov also reported on the rebuilding of the Pacific Fleet submarine base in Vilyuchinsk (Kamchatka) and the garrison’s social infrastructure. Mr Putin said he plans to visit the base and see the situation there at first hand.
