Addressing the meeting, Mr Putin emphasised that the outcome of the Second World War, which began on Soviet territory almost 60 years ago, should warn those who intended to use force in international relations.
The meeting focused on peacekeeping operations and the fight against terrorism.
The CIS leaders adopted the Address to CIS Countries and the World Community on the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. In the address, they confirmed their joint intention to build a democratic, stable and peaceful world order. The participants in the meeting discussed the work of the CIS Counter-Terrorist Centre, which was established by the Council in December 2000, and decided to step up its activity.
The CIS presidents called on UN countries to declare April 26 the International Day Commemorating Victims of Radiation Accidents and Catastrophes in memory of the 15th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.
The participants in the meeting also decided to extend the mandate of the collective peacekeeping forces in Abkhazia. Army General Vladimir Yakovlev was appointed chief of staff on coordinating military cooperation between CIS countries.
The leaders also signed an agreement on cooperation in the fight against computer crime.
After the meeting, Mr Putin took part in a news conference of the CIS leaders.
