President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with British Prime Minister Tony Blair

June 27, 2001

Mr Putin and Mr Blair discussed current international issues.

In relation to the upcoming discussion of the Iraqi situation at the UN Security Council, Mr Putin set out the Russian position on this issue. Russia stands for the gradual lifting of sanctions on Iraq if it resumes cooperation with the UN.

Discussing the situation in Macedonia, the Russian President emphasised the need to step up international efforts to combat separatists and extremists, and guarantee the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Balkan states.

Mr Putin and Mr Blair agreed to hold a bilateral meeting during the G8 summit in Genoa and outlined the meeting’s agenda.
