President Vladimir Putin forwarded a message of greeting to Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev on the 10th anniversary of Kyrgyzstan's independence

August 31, 2001

The message said, in part:

“I am convinced that mutually beneficial Russian-Kyrgyz cooperation will fruitfully develop, as it has in the past, on the basis of our nations’ centuries-long friendship. We attach great importance to the Declaration of Eternal Friendship, Alliance and Partnership between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, which is a firm basis for a lasting strategy aimed at our closer all-round ties.

“We highly appreciate the Kyrgyz contribution to strengthening the Commonwealth of Independent States, the emergence of the Eurasian Economic Community, and the streamlining of the Collective Security Treaty, which is called upon to become an effective tool of Central Asian security.”

Vladimir Rushailo, Russia’s Security Council Secretary, who was visiting Bishkek, delivered the message on August 29.
