President Vladimir Putin sent a message to President Stepan Mesic of Croatia

July 4, 2001

The message said, in particular:

“A detailed discussion in Ljubljana with the US President of a broad range of international issues, including the situation in the Balkans, and an on-site acquaintance with the state of affairs in the region, have confirmed my opinion that stability and reliable security can only be guaranteed by preserving existing borders and respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the states situated there. Today it is extremely important to raise a strong barrier against terrorism and extremism, which pose the greatest threat to our common values.

“We highly value your country’s efforts to normalise the situation and look forward to further coordination of our efforts to strengthen cooperation and security in South East Europe.”
