The Russian leader opened the meeting by thanking Edmund Stoiber for his present of two books on Russian history from secret Bavarian archives. Mr Putin stressed that this gesture set a good example for settling the issue of cultural values.
In this connection, Mr Putin said he had discussed this issue with the German Chancellor and expressed the hope that mutually acceptable solutions to the problem would be found.
