Vladimir Putin highly appreciates Russian-Australian cooperation in the nuclear energy sector

September 7, 2007

In connection with the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes that was signed in Sydney, the President highly praised Russian-Australian cooperation in the nuclear energy sector. The head of state noted that Russia has the necessary technology, while Australia is a world leader when measured by known uranium reserves.

Along with this, Vladimir Putin denied rumors that Russia might use the uranium it purchases from Australia for military purposes and emphasised that the Australian uranium delivered within the agreement's framework will be sold to Russia with special safeguards.

According to the President, Russia has enough of its own uranium to implement its weapons programme. Moreover, there is an excessive amount of materials that could be used for weapons in Russia.

In the joint statement by the presidents of Russia and Australia that was signed in Sydney, Vladimir Putin and John Howard emphasised the role and responsibilities of their countries in promoting the safe and reliable use of nuclear energy.
