President Vladimir Putin met with members of the Unity parliamentary party

February 19, 2002, The Kremlin, Moscow

The Russian leader said Unity was among the largest parliamentary parties, and that it had managed to preserve its political maturity in a complicated national socio-economic situation.

President Putin said it was easy to lure voters in a country like Russia where most people seek out a miserable existence by empty talk, without offering anything constructive. The Russian leader said any serious politician must improve general living standards and strengthen national defensive capability, and that it was necessary to convince the electorate, though it was no easy task.

Vladimir Putin and Unity members discussed the draft for the presidential state-of-the-nation address and the top-priority aspects of the State Duma’s spring-time session.

The conversation lasted for over two hours.
