President Vladimir Putin sent a message of greetings to members of Russia's national squad at the 19th Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City

February 24, 2002

The message said, in part:

“Dear friends,

“The Salt Lake City Olympics are over now. For those of you who triumphed, they will always remain a bright page in your sports biographies. I cordially congratulate all of those who faced tough competition not just to improve their personal track record, but also to make an invaluable contribution to the athletic glory of this country.

”The latest Olympic Games once again reemphasized that sports favours the courageous, the brave and the strong-willed. It is on the side of those who are composed as well as vigorous, those who are not only capable of working hard, but also have an ability for self-control. I know it was these qualities that were of particular importance to you under the harsh conditions of the latest Olympics. And I thank all those who did not let themselves be carried away by emotions in the tense atmosphere of those Games. Our squad’s decision to follow through this extremely challenging Olympic distance was an absolutely mature one.

“I am sure that your athletic prowess and your civic stance will ensure that Russian flags continue to be raised at international competitions. And that the controversial lessons of the Salt Lake City Olympics will arouse sporting rage in you, prompting you to score new victories.

“Russia was with you and rooted for you all the way.

“Now we are waiting for your homecoming.”
