Vladimir Putin and Ariel Sharon exchanged opinions on current Middle East peace talks and the regional situation. The Russian side said it would carry on supporting continued political dialogue between the Israeli leadership and the Palestine National Authority, headed by Yasser Arafat, reaffirmed the need to defuse tensions and to resume political talks.
The conversation was held on the initiative of the Israeli side.
