President Vladimir Putin congratulated President of the Republic of South Africa Thabo Mbeki on his 60th birthday

June 18, 2002

The telegram said, in part:

“The people of Russia know you as a prominent and respected statesman, and wish you every success in your work as the President of the Republic of South Africa.

“Your efforts aimed at promoting the integration of African states and their stable development are widely known. As part of the international assistance in tackling these challenges, also undertaken by the UN, G8, specialised organisations and institutions, Russia will continue to promote mutually beneficial and constructive partnership with the countries of the continent.”

The Russian President personally congratulated Thabo Mbeki on his birthday during a telephone conversation tonight.

The leaders of the two countries stressed traditionally friendly bilateral relations and a shared intention to boost them in different fields of activity.

As Mr Mbeki and a number of leaders of African countries were invited to the forthcoming G8 summit scheduled for June 26–28 in Kananaskis (Canada), Mr Putin said Russia would continue to promote relations with the countries of the continent, including in implementing the New Partnership for Africa’s Development programme. He said Russia would take the same stance at the summit in Canada when discussing a plan of action for Africa.
