Mr Chavez told Mr Putin about efforts being made by the Venezuelan leadership to bring life in the country back to normal and to ensure the effective work of the executive and legislative branches.

The Russian President welcomed Mr Chavez’s reiterated commitment to promoting a nationwide dialogue and harmony, and protecting human rights. He also wished Mr Chavez every success in his efforts to restore civil peace in Venezuela.

Mr Putin and Mr Chavez also discussed some specific issues of Russian-Venezuelan cooperation.

Later that day, Mr Putin spoke by telephone with the German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder.
