President Vladimir Putin and French President Nicholas Sarkozy took part in the unveiling of a monument to the legendary French Normandy-Nieman Air Regiment

October 10, 2007, Lefortovo, Moscow

The remains of Normandy-Nieman Regiment pilots who lost their lives, Heroes of the Soviet Union Marcel Lefevre, Pavel Zhoire Yuley, Morris Pierre Bourdier, Henri Foucault and Henri Georg, were buried at the Vvedenskoye Cemetery in Lefortovo. In the 1950s, their remains were transported back to France. The cemetery is still home today to the graves of French pilot Bruno de Faltan and Soviet technician Sergei Astakhov, who died in the same aircraft. In 1964, a reburial ceremony took place for the remains of an unknown French pilot found in Oryol Region.

Several hundred war veterans resident in Moscow gathered for the unveiling ceremony in the Lefortovo Park. Mr Putin and Mr Sarkozy congratulated the veterans on the event.
