President Vladimir Putin held a working meeting with Natural Resources Minister Yury Trutnev

October 19, 2007, Novo-Ogaryovo

Mr Trutnev informed the President about amendments to the laws regulating minerals use that his ministry has drafted.

At Mr Putin’s request, Mr Trutnev reported on measures taken to resettle residents of Bereznika in Perm Region, whose homes ended up in a risk zone after a technological accident at a mine operated by Uralkalii Company in October 2006. A state commission from the Russian Technical Supervisory Agency that investigated the accident concluded that particularities in the geological structure of the Verkhnekamsk phosphorus and magnesium salts deposit were to blame for the accident. Scientists predict that the soil in the zone around the damaged mine could subside by another 3–4 metres, potentially affecting around 2,000 people. The President instructed Mr Trutnev to speed up work to resettle the affected residents.
