Victory in World War II was a common victory of the people of different countries and different religions, the head of state told the veterans gathered at a gala reception. Today that spirit still helps to build new bridges of trust and mutual understanding between countries and peoples.

Today, Vladimir Putin said, when the main enemy is terrorism, against which even the wealthiest countries with established democratic traditions are not protected, a united front of countries opposing terrorism has emerged as a real factor in world politics.

The common fight against terrorism must be as uncompromising as the fight against Nazism, the Russian leader believes.

Before the reception began the veterans talked with the Russian President about their lives and military reform. Vladimir Putin said, among other things, that Russia would prepare proposals to the CIS Summit on improving the material wellbeing of veterans of the Great Patriotic War who live on the territory of the former USSR. The representatives of veterans’ organizations in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan asked the President to exercise his authority to solve the current problems in the Caucasus region.
