President Putin phoned Mr Bush and offered his sincere condolences to the American nation and the friends and relatives of the astronauts killed in the explosion of the Columbia space shuttle. Mr Putin stressed that Russia and the US have been cooperating in space exploration and this tragedy was particularly painful for the Russian people.
Mr Bush warmly thanked Mr Putin for his sympathy and support.
