Dmitry Medvedev visited Kazakhstan on his first international visit

May 22, 2008

The President of Russia noted that relations between Russia and Kazakhstan are special, trusting and have gained new momentum and deeper substance in recent years.

One of the indicators of success in the two countries' trade and economic relations is stable growth in bilateral trade, which increased by 30 per cent last year and was in excess of $16.5 billion.

Political, economic and cultural contacts are expanding; joint work in the fields of nuclear energy and space exploration is developing successfully.

The main outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Joint Statement which outlines the development of Joint Action Plan for Russia and Kazakhstan for 2009–2010.

Intergovernmental agreements on cooperation in space exploration and the use of Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) were signed in the presence of the heads of state.
