The President visited the submarine base of the Pacific Fleet and met with the crew of St George the Victorious.

When answering servicemen’s questions, Dmitry Medvedev said that recent developments in the Caucasus have pushed Russia to modernise its Armed Forces, develop weapons systems, and develop the most important social support services for personnel more quickly.

All necessary decisions to ensure that the structure of the Armed Forces is modern, efficient, compact, and in conformity with contemporary requirements, will be taken in the very near future.

The head of state identified two major challenges: first, the modernisation of the Armed Forces and second, improving the situation of soldiers, including wage raises, quality housing, and a set of social services. These two components must underpin the restructuring of the Armed Forces, the head of state emphasised.
