Dmitry Medvedev ended his trip to Latin America with a visit to Cuba

November 28, 2008

Mr Medvedev met in Havana with President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers of Cuba Raul Castro.

The two leaders discussed development of Russian-Cuban relations in the economy, security, regional and military technical cooperation, and also examined global issues. Mr Medvedev said that Russia already had full-fledged relations with Cuba, and over the last six months relations between the two countries have become much more intensive.

Mr Castro thanked the Russian authorities for Russia’s help in the disaster relief effort following the recent hurricanes. Mr Medvedev said that Russia is ready to provide any help necessary in forecasting natural disasters, minimising damage and carrying out disaster relief work.

Summing up the results of his Latin American trip, Mr Medvedev said that the visits were very substantial and interesting as far as energy sector cooperation is concerned, despite the current difficulties on the energy market.

The President said there is a whole series of interesting projects and noted that projects in Venezuela are at a more advanced stage. There are also a number of ideas for developing cooperation with Brazil and there are projects in Cuba and Peru.

Over a five-day period, Mr Medvedev visited Peru, Brazil, Venezuela and Cuba.
