Russia, Moldova and Transdniester have adopted a joint declaration aimed at continuing efforts to settle the Transdniester conflict

March 18, 2009

Talks between Dmitry Medvedev, President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin, and Igor Smirnov, leader of Transdniester, resulted in the adoption of a joint declaration aimed at continuing efforts to settle the Transdniester conflict.

The declaration noted the stabilising role played by the peacekeeping operation in Transdniester. In order to pursue efforts to settle the conflict, the parties expressed support for resuming work in the 5+2 group (Moldova, Transdniester, Russia, Ukraine, the OSCE, and observers from the European Union and the United States), and also spoke in favour of transforming the peacekeeping mission currently underway in the region into a new peacekeeping operation under the aegis of the OSCE after settlement of the Transdniester conflict.

Before the three-party talks began, Mr Medvedev first held separate meetings with Mr Voronin and Mr Smirnov.
